DVI to HDMI Conversion

My video card has DVI and s-video outputs. My HDTV set has (among
other things) HDMI and s-video inputs. Right now I am using the
s-video connection. Playing MPEG-2 files on my HDTV directly from the
hard disk yields picture quality which is barely adequate. I just
became aware that connection cables are available that (if I
understand the specs correctly) would allow me to connect the DVI
output connector on my video card directly to the HDMI input connector
on my HDTV. Is it reasonable to expect an improvement in the HDTV
picture if I were to do this? I realize that this will depend on the
quality of the source material.

Your last sentence sums it up precisely. It depends.

S-Video can only carry an SD 480i signal. Your digital TV must
upconvert that signal for display.

Now, if your source material is SD 480i, then the difference will
depend on whether your TV or your computer software/hardware
can do a better job at upconverting.

If your source material is ED 480p, then you will likely see a small
but noticeable improvement. Possibly in the color saturation.

If your source material is HD 720p/1080i/1080p, you will definitely see
the difference.
