Movie Maker 2.1? No.

Vista Ver: 6 can do it.

I bought microsoft vista and I had this option of saving straight to DVD but
I gave it back then on my xp version I discovered that I couldn't save to DVD
but only to CD, there is a way of saving on the computer then write the movie
with Roxio

With Movie Maker 2.1 for Windows XP the "Save to DVD" option is only
available on Media Center Edition PC's which yours apparently is not.

But yes you can save it to your computer and import it into Roxio to create
the DVD which is a practice I always recommend anyway even if you do have
the ability to click "Save to DVD"

What file format does a typical DVD player read? I mean, if you saving a
file to be able to watch on a DVD player, which format would be readable?

Thanks.

DVD's are technically MPEG2 but they are converted to the VOB files etc...
that you typically see on a DVD and those files are read by the DVD player.
You can't "save" a file in a format that the DVD Player can read you need a
DVD Authoring program to convert it to DVD format.
