It's been a while since I last played a DVD by inserting it into the
drive on my XP (SP3) PC. But on trying now I was surprised that it
didn't work. I just get the two VOB folders opening in Explorer.

Could someone remind me how to restore automatic playing please?

XP doesn't come with a DVD codec to play DVDs. You need third party
support to play them on XP. If you have something like PowerDVD or
something, you already have the codec and PowerDVD, Windows Media
Player, etc. can play it. Something like VLC (free) can play them too,
but it wouldn't share the codec with other players.

Thanks Bill, sorry for delay in replying.

Looks like I was mistaken in recalling that I could do so in the past.
Or was it perhaps only CDs that would play automatically on insertion?
