dvdrom won't read some CDs

o/s win2k, Compaq Armada M-700, dvd-rom "dnr8040b" fails
to read many CDs that even my much older Deskpro EN will
read without hesitation. Tried without success to run
Intervideo Win DVD downloaded from Compaq. How to diagnose
and correct this problem??
 
"Not read" as in ?????

Data doesn't show in Explorer after refresh?
