dvdplay.exe

I noticed this file dvdplay.exe in %WINDIR%\system32 and using Properties I
was checking the version tab. It has one. Unfortunately the Manufacturer is
empty. So Googling I found this:

http://www.programchecker.com/file/388.aspx

This site says dvdplay.exe is authentic and Published (manufactured) by
Microsoft. That is unusual most Microsoft exes or dlls that have a version
tab also have copyright information from Microsoft and this one does not. So
I'd like to ask here is this file "authentic?" Thank.

Windows XP Pro SP2.

The Manufacturer is empty on mine also and I have Windows XP Pro SP1.

dvdplay.exe = dvdplay placeholder Application

%WINDIR%\system32\dvdplay.exe
v. 1.0.0.2
Size 54.0 KB (55,296 bytes)

http://support.microsoft.com/dllhelp/?dlltype=file&l=55&alpha=dvdplay.exe&S=1&x=13&y=12

BTW, 16-bit programs do not have Version tabs regardless of who they are
from.

Oh cool it is a System Protected file. I took it out and it was replaced.
Well that's good. Yes I know 16-bit apps don't have version tabs this does
and that is what was strange. I have never seen a 32-bit exe or dll that
has a version tab NOT have Microsoft listed as the mfg when it is in fact
theirs which your posted Knowledge Base artcles attest to. Well leave it to
Microsoft to put a crink in one method of discovering spyware. Thanks
Wesley.

There is probably one less person working at Microsoft because of this
oversight. ;-)
