According to a german FAQ homepage, that I found, your mediaplayer is not at all set for DVD's or playing MPEG.
Here is what you should do: go into 'registry' and change the setting to 'yes' at the end of the following path:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\MediaPlayer\Player\Settings: "EnableDVDUI" (change no to yes)

Then go to http://www.elecard.com/download/ and download this program:

Moonlight-Elecard MPEG2 Player v. 2.1 release and unzip it.

That should do the job - anyway it solved my MPEG trouble!

Merry Christmas.

The drive involved has to have DVD capabilities. A plain CDrom drive will
not work. A DVD decoder needs to be installed. Media Player does not
include a default DVD decoder. Usually I install something like ATI's DVD
player or similar to pick up the codecs. If all of those things are in
place, the only things left that would stop a DVD from playing would be a
bad laser in the drive (see device's manual about laser calibration) or bad
media.
