dvd writers

Hello all, I am looking for some feedback on dvd writers. I am going
to purchase one soon. Of coarse I want the most bang for the buck
while keeping the price down. What should I look for, and which brands
to favor or stear clear of. Do most of these drive come with a "burn"
software package? Any and all inputs are welcomed, thanks in advance
for your time and efforts.-J

I like my external Plextor - a three year old model bought at a discount
when it was discontinued. Reliable and fast on USB, also has a FireWire
connection which I haven't used. It comes with Nero, but I use
DeepBurner instead. I tried the free version of the program, liked the
interface and ease of use, so bought the Pro version, which also burns DVDs.

I would recommend and external model in any case, there is IMO no
advantage to having an internal one, and the external is of course portable.

Top brands of dvd writers are so cheap now (£17 -£25) that they are hardly worth worrying about.

I would normally post lists of freeware in

alt.comp.freeware

where a lot of good info can be found.

It's possible that the OP killed him/herself because of the dead DVD
burner? <bg>

I find it's pretty interesting that someone just pop in to drop a bomb
(dead question) then vanish just like users here to serve them <bg>. Don't
people realize that many people spend lot of time reading and sharing
experience to learn more by confirmation?
