Hi,

I bought a DVD writer some time back, but never actually used it other
than to save data on a CD. Recently when I tried to back-up my
information to DVD, it's not reading any DVD-RWs. I've tried other
DVD-Rs & DVD-RWs as well, but still nothing.

Any ideas what is wrong? Is it software or hardware related?

It could possibly just need the lense cleaning.

OK . . . DVD-R will have nothing to read until it is burnt.

DVD-RW will have nothing to read until it has been formatted. Formatted as
in, the disk has to be formatted just like a floppy disk or a hard drive.
Your DVD burning software should prompt you automatically to do this. If
the disk has already been formatted, then it periodically needs to be
re-formatted, depending on how much you burn and what options you specify
while burning. Your DVD burning software will call this re-formatting
"erasing" the disk.

Now, you can use DVD media just like a floppy disk. HOWEVER, you have to
have special software running constantly to do so. In other words, if you
just fire up Windows Explorer, you will see nothing on the disk, and won't
be able to write to it, either. -Dave

Does that mean you tried DVD-R / DVD-RW of different manufacturers or did
you also try DVD+R / DVD+RW mediums?

make sure the software you're using is a version capable of recognizing
and/or burning DVDs... what software are you using, by the way?
