Well i'm taking the plunge and getting a DVD writer. I've had a look around
and would appreciate any suggesstions.

I like the look of the NEC ND2500A and the Optorite DD0401 DVD +RW.

My budget is £130.

Thanks in Advance for replies

Hi, a good writer I would recommend is the Pioneer 106D, which from personal
experiences and reviews on sites, have been very good, and also it uses +
and - minus format, and will burn on all type of media and compatibility is
good with stand alone DVD and Consoles.

I bought the HI-VAL (4x DVD/2.4 RW/24x CDR) combo with +or- ability and it
can write to all media. It cost me $99.00 from staples the week before
christmas

I don't know how much that is in American $, but my vote is for Plextor
708A. It's about $200 here in the states purchased online, so I'm sure it
within your ballpark.

Also forgot to say, that the oem version only costs around £90 in shops, or
cheaper on-line.

i think the drives are about equal but there's more likely to be hacked
firmware available for the nec to make it region free etc... if that
matters.

I own three DVD burners. The first is the NEC ND2500A and it's not a
bad drive. I occasionally run into media that won't work with it, but
overall it works fairly well. I bought it based on price and it's now
in my wife's computer.

The second is the Optorite DD0203 and I bought it primary because it
does CD burning at 24x and I was hoping to completely replace my CD
burner with it (16x is just too slow for burning CD's). I had a lot of
problems with it at first. It didn't work with most media I tried.
However, the firmware update in November finally solved that problem.
It's now in my computer at home and I haven't had any problems with it
in quite some time.

The third is the Pioneer A06 which is in my computer at work. This
thing has been a workhorse and I haven't had a single problem with it
from the moment I got it. Since Pioneer appears to be the standard by
which all other DVDR drives are measured, it works with ALL known media
and it's been extremely reliable. The only "problem" with it, if you
want to call it that, is CD burning is slow, so I had to keep a fast CD
burner in my computer.

Personally, I'm waiting for the Pioneer A07 to be released at the end of
this month...

Hard to beat the Lite-On 811S, which is an 8X model, and does 40X CDR/24X
CDRW as well. Paid $140 (USD), doesn't come with the most robust software
package, to be sure, but it is fast, and seems media-tolerant. I don't know
the availability where you are...
