DVD writer not recognized as burner

I am not sure how long the problem has been, but I just realized the Sony DVD
writer is no longer recognized as a writer. However, it still reads DVDs
okay. I tried removing it and adding it back, but discovered another problem
in the process. Each time I tried scanning for new hardware or adding new
hardware, Windows suddenly reboots. I first associated this problem with the
DVD situation, until I found out today Windows again suddenly reboots when I
tried to add a modem. I don't know if registry somewhere is damaged or not.
Any idea?

Upon checking the drive's property, recording tab is already present. But
under programs such as Nero or ImgBurn, the drive is not recognized as a
burner. I also find it odd that the displayed name of the drive under "My
Computer" is "CD Drive", rather than "DVD Drive".

sorry forgot to be more specific about the burning software. The DVD writer
is not even listed as available recorder. I guess from that, these software
doesn't see this drive as a valid recorder. I ran Sony's Drivecheck program,
and it went not responding. I then tried to re-install its firmware, and an
error message appeared indicating "no matched drive detected" . Is it
possible for a DVD writer to be damaged in such a way, that it still
functions as an ordinary DVDROM, but no longer able to burn?

Don't worry about this. XP recognising a DVD drive as a CD drive in My
Computer is a common problem. It does not affect the ability of other
utilities to operate with the drive as intended.

Have you tried uninstalling the DVD drive, rebooting and allowing XP to
reinstall it? Have you tried the DVD drive on a different port?

It is possible, but I would regard it as highly unlikely.
