I'm thinking about installing a DVD writer in my old PIII 500Mhz but I've
noticed that most writers quote a PIII 700Mhz-1Ghz minimum hardware spec.
How important really is this? Is anyone successfully using a DVD writer in
an older PC like mine?

Cheers,
Paul

For email replace "nospam" with "dazzle".

The MPEG2 encoding time will probably make you want to pull your hair
out, but as long as the HD can handle around 6MB/sec sustained transfer
rate you should be able to do 4x burning no problem.

If it can't, then you can always burn at a lower speed.

A chap I work with tried exactly the same thing on the same speed
processor. Neither a Liteon or an MSI drive would write DVD's. When
put in a faster machine, both worked perfectly. His HDD speed was well
over those figures quoted in another post.

FWIW, I'd consider spending the money on an upgrade before you buy the
burner.
