I have a new NEC ND1300A DVD-rw. I have tried many types
of media and XP keeps telling me the drive does not
contain a recordable disk.

Guess what, you are not alone. I have exactly the same
problem with a Toshiba DVD/CD-RW combo unit.
There are some things that you may try:
- test with different kind of media (distinguished easily
by the colors that shine on the CD)
- if you have Norton Antivirus 2003/2004 installed, go to
the Symantec web site and make a search about cd burning,
you will get directions on how to overcome the problem (it
did not work with me however)
- try install Win XP Service Pack 1 (again, it did not
work with me)
- as a last resource, watch my thread in this newsgroup, I
hope somebody will contribute something else that may work.

Cheers

I tried the Symantec fix. It did not help. Windows and
NAV are both up to date with all updates. I have noticed
that in the properties for the dvd burner it says that no
region is selected and it will not allow me to change it
even though there appears to be 5 changes available.

I got no results at all with the Symantec Fix.
Personally, I am going to reinstall the whole lot, I do
not like the idea but I need the ability to burn CDs.

I have no idea what's up with your regional coding, you
may try to remove the device (from the Device Manager),
reboot and have Windows regonize again the device. This
will work if your driver is on the Windows H/W
Compatibility List. I also suggest that you make a search
within the MS knowledge base to see if there is
some 'register trick' that can solve the problem.
