hi all, i have a problem that maybe someone here could help me with - or
not..
a year ago i burned a whole bunch of dvd´s (different files etc.)
now, it seems i cant read them anymore. there are no scratches on them, and
ive bought a new dvd player, which also wont read them. im totally confused,
when i put the dvd into any one of the dvd drives, the files show up almost
instantly, but if i right click on them, it takes ages for the drop down box
to appear, then (if it doesnt crash explorer)- it wont copy the files.
ive re-installed windows, cleaned the dvd`s, tried to open them with winiso
etc, but nothing seems to help.
these dvd`?s worked perfectly before, but now...?
they are kept in cd boxes in a cupboard, not too hot, not too cold.
has anyone got an explanation for this behaviou`r?
its driving me insane.
it almost seems as though they are degrading over time.

thanx

steve

There are several aspects:
* Quality of the media
* Quality of the reader
(I got a 2 speed CD-ROM that reads nearly everything,
where new 52x or DVD-ROMs might fail).
* Quality of the burner
My first CD-R had a issue, which caused several CD-ROMS
not to read the CD correctly (the 2 speed worked again :) )
this was structural and the burner was fixed by the manufacturer...
* Age of the media
They slowly deteriorate, obviously dependent on the quality of the media.

Combination of the above...
I had a Nassua CD-R burned with a old TEAK CD-RW. The person for who it was
intended could not read it at his home computer, however it worked fine on
the system he had at work. Now I've burnt the thing with a LITEON DVD-RW
(same type of media) and I didn't hear it didn't work (yet). Personally I
had never trouble with the media, but other claim they had.

Usually burners are more tollerant than readers. You might also try a couple
of your friends, presumably with some old hardware. These sometimes seem
more tollerant or reliable.

Don't forget, NEVER clean a cd or dvd by wiping in circles, but always using
a very soft cloath and wipe from the inside straight to the outside,
otherwise you will damage the media.
