I have a several-year-old Dell with Windows XP. The CD slide tray says that
it accepts DVDs, but it appears that there is no software activated to view
DVD discs. Is there something buried in the innards of the machine that has
to be activated . . . or will it require purchase of an after market viewing
program? If purchase, any recommendations?

What happens if you put a DVD into the drive? My DVD drive came with
software but it appears Windows Media Player 10 will also play a DVD?

Windows does not come with a DVD player. However your computer may have come
with one that Dell supplied.

Have you tried to view a DVD? If so and it doesn't work, then presumably
you'll have to get one. Sorry, I don't watch DVDs on my computer and have no
recommendation.

Go grab this while it's still free. It is very "light" & won't bog your
computer down either & just look what it can do?

Any media player you do get including Windows Media Player, will most likely
need a codec pack as well. (google)

How to Check if DVD Decoder Software is Installed...

By default, Windows XP does not come with compatible DVD decoder software
installed. To confirm if you have Windows XP-compatible DVD decoder
software
on your system:

Start | Run | Type: dvdupgrd /detect | Click OK |

A Windows dialog box will open with identifying information about the
installed software. If No decoders found is displayed, no decoder is
installed and you cannot play DVDs.

For example...
---------------------------
Detected DVD decoders
---------------------------
No decoders found
W2k Upgrade=no
Win9x Upgrade=no
LCID=0409
---------------------------
OK
---------------------------

Then get out your credit card...

"get out your credit card" indeed.........
Not on your life. There's that many free codec packs out there that will do
the job for you that you just tell the money hungry ones to go take a jump.

What kind of malware comes with the free ones?
