DVD trouble

For some reason, I've never been able to get my laptop
DVD player to show movies on my TV screen when I hook it
up. I can see the desktop of my computer on the TV. As
soon as the movie starts, I HEAR it on the TV, but the
video doesn't show up. The screen goes black. I was told
by a tech support person from Sony that some DVDs have a
special coding on them to protect people from copying
them and it also sometimes makes it so you can't view it
on your computer. But I do see it on the laptop screen,
just not on the TV.

Any ideas??
