DvdX is really a great tool, I think is freeware.

i'm not sure what guide you are referring to. DvdX is very easy to use, and
there are some free guides for it out there on the net:

The best without a doubt is DVD2SVCD (don't let the name fool ya - it does
VCD, too.)

WinCopyDVD http://www.wincopydvd.com, you could convert your DVD to
VCD in 30 minutes, and if you choose copy DVD to SVCD (it will be done
in 1 hours), you could get the stunning video/audio quality as same as
DVD's.
