Hi,

I have a HP Multimedia with Windows XP installed.
All of a sudden one of the DVDs stopped working, whatever I use, a DVD or a
CD when I try to see the content with the Explore it says: Please Insert a
Disk into Drive F:
The other DVD (RW) behaves strangely with music CDs.
I don't know whether it is related with some improper remove of an USB
storage device or not.

I had the same problems with another computer, both CD drives went dead with
the same message.
I tried to disconnect the drives and connect them again, but the Windows
2000 didn't sense there was a new hardware installed. I had to reinstall
Win. 2000 to make it run again.

I do not want to reinstall Windows XP on the other PC though.

Thanks,
Doru

If the optical drive on the HP PC is not seeing any disks at all, it's
probable that it's dead. If it saw CDs but not DVDs, then one of the lasers
has gone (different one for DVD and CD).

For the second drive (the RW) try a standard CD cleaning kit.

In the Windows 2000 PC, did you check the hardware... power cable and ribbon
cable. If they come lose, the drives 'disappear'.

Thanks Cari for the reply.
As I mentioned before in the case of Win 2000 PC the CD drives came back to
life only when I re-installed the Operating System, which means they were
not really dead.
For the XP neither the CDs nor DVDs are seen by the unit. It is hard to
believe that both lasers died simultaneously. I think the problem is rather
with the operating system.
