If I boot up with cd or dvd in drive, then explorer and
media player will recognize files on disk drive. If I
insert cd or dvd after boot up, computer says drive is
empty.

auto play does not work. However, I believe i can record
a disk. I discarded old cd writer as inop, bought new
sony dvd writer - i was looking for an excuse - to solve
problem which i thought was a result of smashing into
drive bay when open, and yikes, I still have the same
problem.

Discovered boot up reading works by accident. Puzzled.

Using xp pro with sv pack 1 installed.
