I recently formatted my laptop and reinstalled windows cause it was
getting full of rubbish, anyway, it was working fine but then today i
went to burn a cd and it said "no cd-rw drive found"! I do have one
cause i burnt a cd a few days before!

I can't think of anything i've done that could change it. I installed
adobe acrobat and PowerISO. I uninstalled powerISO but same thing
happens. I tried using windows restore and put it back a few days, but
it stil happened.

The only other thing is windows automatic update, possibly it could
have installed something? I was going to restore it to as far back as
it would let me, but i would loose some work that i've done and stuff
i've downloaded, i'd back it up but i can't burn anything to cd!

Please any one any ideas???

Thanks very much

Jamie

CD-R drive or CD-RW drive is not recognized as a recordable device
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/316529

How to troubleshoot issues that occur when you write data to a CD-R or CD-RW
Optical Disc in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/324129

Open My Computer | Right click the CD drive | Properties |
You should see a recording tab

If you right click My Computer | Manage | Disk Management |
Right click the CD drive | Properties | You will not see a recording tab

Check these registry keys for a NoCDBurning value:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\
CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
and/or
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\
CurrentVersion\policies\Explorer
and/or
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\
CurrentVersion\Policies\Network
and/or
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\
CurrentVersion\Policies\Network

Value Name: NoCDBurning
Data Type: REG_DWORD
Value Data: 0 or 1
0 = Enable Burning
1 = Disable Burning

NoCDBurning stores configuration data for the policy setting Remove CD
Burning features.

If the Value NoCDBurning does not exist under any of the above keys, that is
the same as Enable Burning.

Thanks for the reply. I checked the registry but there was no
"NoCDBurning". It just keeps saying its a DVD/CD-ROM! I tried
uninstalling it and reinstalling it, but it detects it as a ROM.

One of those links says how to change it if detected incorrectly, in a
registry file it should say "2" and it does, so it knows it should be a
writer! But in device manager it thinks its a ROM!

I'm confused and angry! lol

Any other suggestions?

Thanks

Jamie
