Micky M.

I have a Philips DVD+RW-D01 internal drive that is about 18 months old. For
a few months, I have been getting read errors when I verify backups. I have
tried all kinds of brand of disk yet I cannot work out if the problem is
disk or drive related. I've tried cleaning the drive with a CD player
cleaning disk. No better or worse since.

Can anyone help, please?

Thanks,

Mike

Yeah thats a bummer.
DVD writers arent cheap even now with the huge price drops , its
around $149 or so.
Liteon and NEC DVD+R writers are about that now at NEWEGG and several
other places.

Actually my Memorex/Ricoh when I bought it new wouldnt write at all .
I RMAd it and its been perfect the last 4 months.
I dont use it that much though. Only for DVD burns , I use my Liteon
CDRW for CDRs. Thats what you should do
- you can get a CDRW for so cheap , not worth wearing out the DVD/CDRW
burner.

Yours I take it from the Firmware website is the Ricoh 5120 rebadged
as a Philips. It can only write to DVD+RW and not +Rs. The 5125 I
think does that , which I have. Many of the + writers were Ricohs
rebadged . Nec now makes one as does Liteon and
and they say at the site Philips is teaming with the cheapo BENQ to
make their own soon.

IF you havent already you might want to check out the firmware website
where they talk about flashing DVD writers and how to flash Ricoh
rebadged makes to Ricoh firmware. Sometimes Ricoh will have many more
firmware updates than the rebadger firm has . Memorex for instance
doesnt have many updates - I used the info at firmware website to
update it to the latest hacked Ricoh firmware to make it also region
free.

Be sure to read all the caveats so you dont end up with a dead drive.
