Hi,

Can anyone tell me what the typical life expectancy of a DVD RW drive is,
in say hours of actual usage? Will reading discs shorten the life of the
drive in exactly the same way as burning? I'm using a Pioneer 106D if
anyone has drive specific info.

Good question. I wish I had the right answer. Two X-mas's ago my mom
and sister bought me an external Philips CD-WRITER but the speed was
4x12x4 which is slow but after two years the thing is still going strong.
And the quality of it is the best I've ever seen. You can tell it's
a solid machine.

One day when I was moving my PC to another room I dropped
the player on the ground from waist level. A solid hit on tile. I
thought well that's it, that thing isn't going to run anymore. But
when I hooked it up it played. Solid as the day I got it. Philips
didn't skimp when they made it that's for sure.

Internal drives and even home players look cheaply built. You never
know when they're going to blow on you. The only thing good about
them are they're cheap to buy these days. It's gotten to the point
now where we cross our fingers every time we put in a disc.
