I'm using Windows XP Pro SP2 with all updates. When I put a DVD-R in my
Sony (Liteon) DVD-RW/CD-RW drive the disk icon changes from DVD Drive to CD
Drive. When I use burning software of any kind it will not let me load up
more than approximately 1Gb

As soon as I take out the DVD-R the drive is reported as a DVD-RW drive.

Can any one advise how I can fix this?

When I checked in device manager it is being reported as a Sony DVD-RW
DW-D22A but this is listed after two virtual drives of Alcohol 120.
Something in the back of my mind remembers that the virtual drives should
not be listed before the hardware. If I'm correct could someone confirm
this and advise how I could get them listed after the DVD-RW?

you could delete the dvd-rw and then reinstall
