Andrew

I recently put in Pioneer DVR-A05U DVD-RW drive into my
computer. Worked fine in Win98, but when I went to XP I'm
having problems with it being seen only as a CD-ROM. It
won't play DVD's, and my burning software is not seeing a
writable drive there. Any suggestions???

Thanks!

Hi Ron!

Thanks for the help. Although the desciption of the
problem on the link you provided did discribe my problem,
the fix did not work. The registry that it told me to
edit was already set to "2" for CD-RW. I also tried "1"
setting for CD-R, but it was to no avail. Any other
suggestions???

Thanks!

Hmm. Have you updated to the latest FIRMWARE on the drive? Also, from
where did the drivers originate [that you are using]? And what is the
PRI-SEC-MASTR-SLAV configuration for all drives? What about jumpers?

Back to you.

Hi Ron!

I have the drive set to cable select, and it is set up be
my primary slave. The firmware is up to the latest
eddition (v1.33), and the drivers are the CD Drivers that
come with XP. I've also done all XP updates available via
microsoft.

Thanks!

Hmm. OK, you didn't indicate the assignment of the other drives in the
system, but I'll assume that you have a CD-ROM on the SEC
channel...presumably as MSTR.

Try this: UNinstall the DVD - and the CD-ROM if you have one - from within
DevMgr. Shut down, and set the jumper for the new DVD as MSTR, and attach
it to the end of the SEC cable. (If you DO have a drive plugged in there
already, just leave it disconnected temporarily.) Reboot, ensure the BIOS
is configured to auto-detect all drives, and see what happens.

I'm trying to suggest some non-radical ideas here, Andrew. Meanwhile,
perhaps another poster will step in and offer some feedback.

Andrew...this is often a simpler issue than it appears. (Although it seems
rather huge when it happens to you, right?!) Anyway, before either of you
get too deep into this, try something else;

Uninstall DVD in DevMgr. Uninstall Both IDE controllers in DevMgr. Shut
down. Unplug IF cables for all drives except boot drive. Reboot and ensure
boot is successful, and controllers have been re-discovered. Shut down, and
attach DVD to SEC/MSTR (with jumper set accordingly). Reboot. Reply.

Hmm. Andrew, I am stumped. Initially I was dismayed to see that you did
not configure your system as I suggested. Although I cannot pledge that it
will work, at the same time I am trying to follow a sequence to narrow the
problem.

Nevertheless, I still have a feeling that this will turn out to be something
stupid; like a faulty cable, or something like that. Meanwhile, it appears
that you've tried just about everything else. (So you might as well try a
different cable, right?) Beyond that, I'd still look at drivers, although
after a fast search I was unable to locate any on the 'net.

Oh - and one more thing; did you install then UNinstall any "burning"
software? What creation s/w do you have at this point? Also, have you
updated your BIOS lately? That's actually a great place to resume this
adventure.

Back to you.
