I was recently hit with the RTKT_XCP.A virus. From what I can find out, the
virus attacks the $sys$filesystem and hides files, folders, and registry keys
with $sys$ starting names. As a result of the virus, I can no longer access
either the DVD or the CD drives on my sony VAIO PCV-Rx725 computer.

The virus has been quarantined, however, I can find no clues as to what I
need to do to reset the system files so that the DVD and CD drives are
accessible. The drives are no longer visible in "My Computer", "Explore",
"system info/system summary/components"..... Any help on restoring this or
unhiding these files will be greatly appreciated.

If they appear in Device Manager, uninstall them and reboot.
If they do not appear, right click on My computer icon,
choose Manage, go to Removable Drives, and check if they do
appear there.

WinXp can be repaired by launching an Installation from within
Windows and choosing Update.

Your installed programs will work as before with no need
to reinstall them.

Check out Mark Russinovich's telling blog about Sony-BMG's rootkit included
on 52 of their music CD titles, in the name of Digital Rights Management, and
what steps they took to hijack your computer and make it vulnerable to
attack. Mark's blog also outlines why and how your DVD/CD drive(s) don't
work, and what steps he took to remedy the problem on his machine. Then
thank Sony-BMG for this latest demonstration of their continued contempt for
legitimate, paying customers. Even the Department of Homeland Security is
pissed about this one. Check it out at:
