dvd rom refusing to function help!!

dvd rom on newly purchased pc will not play dvds, just tells me that there is no disk inserted in drive E (which is the cd-rom drive!). Also the dvd rom does not appear as an icon in "my computer". I am a bit thick with computers and need help thank you anyone!!!!!
 
Rt click on MyComputer>Select Properties>Hardware>Device Manager. Click
on + sign next to
Dvd/Cdrom Drives. See if it shows up and if there's a yellow mark next
to it. rt click on it and select Uninstall.
Restart your computer and let WinXP reinstall it. You may also need
updated firmware from the Manufacturers website.
