DVD-ROM Quality differences

I have DVDs that I've burned that are read really well by high end
readers (DVD burners, and expensive DVD-ROM drives) but that seem to
read less and less realiably the closer the information is to the
outer portions of the disc when used in an inexpensive drive. I don't
mean at the very edge, but from the middle onward. I am currently
using this drive in a homebuilt PVR.

Is there any particular difference in drive quality that I could
repair myself? Could I, for instance, benefit by replacing the lens
on the cheaper drive? If not, I would appreciate recommendations on
good quality DVD-ROM drives for such an application. Speed is not an
issue as I'm just playing video and audio off of them. A 1x or 2x
DVD-ROM drive would be just fine.

Thank you for your help

You don' t say anything about the brand of your DVD writer nor about the
DVD's. The general rule is that you should use only brand hardware and brand
DVD's. And for optimal compatibility, make your records on DVD-R, not DVD+R.
