Thanks for the reply, much appreciated
My ide cable is connected correctly and I have checked
the DMA settings they are device 0, dma 4 and device 1,
dma is this ok or does it need changing, how can i change
it. They work ok individually and in safe mode, when
together the cd-rw opens files but very slow and the dvd
not at all
any feedback would be great and thanks

Even you have jumpered the drives correctly, you must
ensure they are correctly connected to the right IDE
cable connectors.
For example, DVD rom jumpered as master and CD/RW as
slave, the DVD should then be connected to the IDE
connector at the end and the CD/RW at the middle. (both
connectors is about 8 inches apart from each other) The
far end connector should be connected to the secondary
IDE channel on the mobo.
Also in BIOS, have you enables DMA mode for the secondary IDE channles?
Usually it should be DMA mode 5 for DVD-rom and DMA mode
2 (or PIO mode 4) for the CD/RW (asumming DVD-rom is
master and CD/RW is slave)
Also go to device manager/hardware and check for the
secondary IDE channels, it should be DMA mode 5 for
device 0 and DMA2 or PIO 4 for device 1.
Click to enable DMA if it is not yet setted.
If both DMA mode is setted in BIOS as well as in device
manager and all the connections and jumpers are correctly
setted and connected but you are still have the same
problem; try boot in safe mode and login as administrator.
Go to device manager/hardware and then uninstall the DVD-
rom as well as the CD/RW than reboot to normal startup.
Let windows search and install the drivers for both
optical drives.
If the same problems appeared after all the above- mentioned fixing methods,
you may need to run regedit to delete the upper and lower filters for both drives.
Note: if you run regedit, make sure to backup the reg
files before deletion for just in case. You also need to
re-install the burning software after the deletion of
upper & lower filters.
