DVD Rom problem -help needed

I hope this is the right forum but if its not perhaps you can point me in the
right direction.
The kids played a game called Casino Empire on their own PC which would
freeze every time it was played. After contacting the manufacturers I was
advised to log onto the Samsung site and download an upgrade for the DVD-Rom.

I did this and downloaded a Bin file(20030919144343187_SM-332B_COM-T406)
and a file named sfdwin.exe to my own PC as it has internet access. I copied
the downloaded stuff to disk and attempted to install it on the other PC.
During that procedure I was given the option of removing an old file which I
did (thinking this was the right thing to do).

Now the DVD-Rom will not work. Even the shortcut icon has a question mark
shown on it. When the PC is booted up there is a message saying that the
“Secondary hard disk drive 0 not found†and “Strike the F1 key to continue,
F2 to run the set up utilityâ€

The CD/DVD-Rom is made by Samsung. On clicking the properties I got this -
ST 380023A (probably the hard drive) and “AXV CD/DVD-ROM SCSI cdRom deviceâ€
The OS is Windows XP

Can you help please as I know very little computers

Thanks for the link RB. I had a look and the problem seems very similar to
mine. One of the solutions was "You will Also need to remove Plug and Play
Bios Extension from System Devices. and if needed the Virtual Drive Drivers
from the Windows/System32/Drivers Folder" which is a bit double dutch to me.
I wouldnt know where to start.
If I even knew how to contact Samsung would be a help. Done a google search
but couldn't find anything.

Cheers Peter,

I got the instructions given below when I downloaded the files and perhaps
did not follow them exactly. I dont really know. In the middle of the
insallation I was asked if I wanted to "delete the old file ?" and as there
was only 1 button to click which was the OK one I did so and this has now
rendered the drive unusable.

I did send a copy of my original post to Samsung but have yet to receive a
reply. my main concern is at start up where I press F1 to proceed as opposed
to F2 to run the set up utility. Perhaps if this was run and the correct data
entered I may have no problems but I dont know what to fill in for the
various requested data.
In any event is it actually safe to use the PC in its present form? it does
boot up several minutes after hitting F1 and the jids are playing some games

Hi,

No, it won't do more harm to the OS but if you don't fix the firmware then
the DVD Combo drive become useless. It is a hardware problem and cannot be
fixed unless you can update the firmware successfully.

Pls follow my previous post to download the bin and exe files again and then
save them to a specific folder. Print out the update firware instructions
then run the Sfdnwin.exe

Care: You must strictly follow the update instructions.

Caution:
When you upgrade your firmware, please check the "Buyer" on your label of
drive.
If you upgrade wrong firmware, you will have a problem in operating.
example) SM-332B/*** 63BT123456 F/W=T403(***=Buyer)

It is of no harm to run the Sfdnwin.exe again.

Thanks Peter,

I have downloaded the files and instructions as recommended. That is as far
as my knowledge basically goes at the moment. When I tried the upgrading
myself a couple of days ago I got myself into this mess.
Things are a bit clearer now. I have put everything I downloaded on to a
disc and my son has taken this togeteher with the PC to a friend of his
today. His friend apparently is a bit of a whizz kid with these things so
hopefully come Tuesday (bank holiday weekend here) all will be sorted out.

I will post again to let you know the outcome.

Thanks again for all the help and advice

Declan,

Sorry to hear that. To the best of my knowledge, if the flash rom (a kind of
chips that use to store the firmware) is not being damaged in the firmware
updating process, you can run the update process again to update the
firmware. However, if there is a bad block to the firmware chips, there is
nothing we can do about it but send it for a repair. The technician either
use the burn-in technic to burn the firmware to the firmware chips (cannot be
updated in future) or change to a new chips (can be updated in future)

Similar to a mobo BIOS update, if you encounter some problems during the
BIOS update process, DO NOT POWER OFF the machine but just run the BIOS
update process again to update the BIOS again or revert to the original BIOS.

Any way, pls take it easy and await for your friend's favourable reply.

Peter,

I picked the PC up 2 days ago but the chap who fixed it wasn't there so I
didn;t find out exactly what the problem was. My son will be talking to him
soon so I will find out then.

Anyway it needed a new DVD Rom drive (or maybe he just decided to make a bit
of handy money). It cost me 50 euro but I,m still not convinced that the
downloaded files would not have worked.
Hope to find out more in the next couple of days.

I hate to bother but you wouldn't happen to know anything about a "16 Bit
Windows Subsystem" error.
It's left the kids PC that it will only play certain games. It was fine up
to a few months ago

Thanks for your help

chips that use to store the firmware) is not being damaged in the firmware
updating process, you can run the update process again to update the

Peter,

Just to keep you updated. It will be another day or so before I get the PC
back but I got a reply from Samsung. I dont think that I mentioned this
before but I sent a query off to them (same as original post here) but only
got a response today.

Have a look and I think you will see why computer dummies like me depend so
much on other people for help

this may cause the firmware chip to become blocked,

at one of our service centers.

:

Declan

:

Thanks for the help Peter. Unfortunately I amnot too technically minded and
some of the stuff on the links would be a wee bit beyond me.
I did manage to find a printed copy of the system profiler from a couple of
years ago.
The DVD/CD-RoM is a Samsung CDRW/DVD SM-332B

In the short term is it safe to use the PC or should I delete the sfdwin.exe
file and any ideas as to what to do at start up. Should I press F1 or F2

Declan,

To fix the "16 Bit Windows Subsystem" error, restore the autoexec.nt file
from C:\windows\repair folder. If it disappears or gets broken again, suspect
a malware issue and remove same.

Procedures:

Double click My Computer, click the C drive, click WINDOWS and find the
repair folder
C:\WINDOWS\repair\autoexec.nt
right click on the file "autoexec.nt " and select copy then paste it to
C:\WINDOWS\system32\AUTOEXEC.NT
Let the file "autoexec.nt " copied from the repair folder to replace the
existing file" AUTOEXEC.NT" in the system32 folder.

If the symptom persists, pls run any anti-spyware softwares e.g. Adaware
Personal SE from lavasoftusa.com or Spybot Search & Destroy. Ensure the PC is
free from virus and spywares then proceed the copy & paste of the file again.

Hope it helps you to fix it.

Thanks Peter,

just after I posted I did a search on this forum and found details of the
error. The problem is on the kid's PC (same one with the dvd rom problem.)
There is a "VX2" malware in it which I cant get rid of.

That PC is not connected to the internet but when it was a few months ago i
did download and install some sort of removal tool from Adaware which was
supposed to fix it but it didn't.

I assume there is no point in trying the procedure as you described until I
get rid of the VX2.

ANy ideas other than a system restore or a complete reinstall of how to
banish the VX2.

Thanks again for the help

regards

Declan

Declan,

Firstly, you must stop the restore feature and clear all the restored files.
Right click My Computer/Properties/System Restore
Check the box "Turn off System Restore on all drives", click Apply and OK

Run Adaware to download & install the latest spywares definitions.
Then go to the link below to download the VX2 cleaner:

http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/addons/vx2cleaner.shtml

Follow the instructions for how to run the add-on tools to remove VX2
Run Adaware again to ensure the VX2 is completely removed from the system.

After the cleanup of VX2, run any antivirus software with the latest virus
definitions to ensure your system is free from any
virus/trojans/spywares/malwares, etc. Reboot the PC then re-enable the System
Restore feature by uncheck the box "Turn off System Restore on all drives",
click Apply and OK

Hope it helps.

Peter,

Thank you so much for the replies. As you will have guessed I'm a bit of a
novice with Pc's. The kids PC is in a different room and not connected to the
internet but can I download the items you mentioned including the up to date
adaware (and possibly AVG) on to my own PC and copy this to disc and then
load all into the kids PC from the disc.

I haven't got much help here where I live and I really do appreciate your
help and advice which has been fairly easy to understand even for a novice
like me.

thanks again

Declan

Declan,

Theoritically you can download AVG and Adaware to your PC then copy and
install them on the kid's PC. However, it is rather complicated to download
the latest update definitions from AVG and Adaware and then install them to
the kid's PC.
It is more easy for you to move the kid's PC to your room and then connect
it to the internet (provided that it has a lan card or modem or your PC using
external modem, then you just need to install the modem drivers on the kid's
PC)

Peter,

Sorry for the delay in getting back with an update on what happened the DVD
drive.
My son finally got round to asking what the problem was and his friend told
him that it had basically just worn out.

As you are aware I know very little about computers but seeing as the
problem occured during installation of a firmware upgrade it was fairly
obvious that this is where the problem lay. But in order not to put my son on
a spot I decided to let it go.

At least his friend has given me a guarantee wih the new drive.

I will take your advice about the kids PC. It will be easier than I thought
as there is a phone socket in their room so I think I just have to disconnect
the modem and connect it again in their room.

I will keep you posted or indeed if I hit a problem I may be back to torture
you for some good advice.

Thanks

Declan

Declan,

You are welcome.
