Try the drive in another machine or boot with a Bart's PE or Knoppix to see
if the drive responds under another operating system. If it doesn't,
replace it. Or just swap it out for a known-working one. If that drive
works, you know there's nothing wrong with Windows. A DVD-ROM drive is very
inexpensive.

It doesn't matter because 1) you don't have another computer; 2) this is
going to be beyond your computer skills. I don't mean to hurt your feelings
by saying that; I'm just being practical.

Either simply replace the drive or, if you are uncomfortable opening the
machine and working with the hardware, take it to a professional computer
repair shop.

I had the same problem recently. A good way to test your drive is to try
to boot the machine to your XP cdrom (make sure moherboard bios is set
to boot to the cdrom drive first). Mine would only boot to it on about
one of every ten tries. That means the drive is bad so you have to get a
new one. CDROM drives are so cheap because they are such crap quality.
It is the most common hardware device prone to failure, in my experience
anyway.

Windows XP - Have just started using blank dvds - programs (video editor,
explorere, etc) do not recognise them, ask to insert disc BUT dvds with
video on them play just fine...have tried wifes pc and same problem...are we
missing something?
