DVD-ROM not being recognised at boot up

This has been covered many times no doubt, but I have a DVD-ROM at Drive F,
which, according Win XP on boot up doesn't exist. The BIOS shows "None"
against the entry where it should be.

If I disconnect the drive internally from the IDE cable (shared with Main
HD), reboot, then shutdown. Then, reconnect drive and reboot, the drive
appears again.

Anything I can do to ensure Win XP always recognises it's there? I have Win
XP Home with latest service pack and updates.

Thanks,

Steve.

If the BIOS isn't even recognizing it's present, it's not a Windows problem,
it's deeper than that.

I'd start by changing the ribbon cable between motherboard and drive,
checking the jumper at the rear of the drive and ensuring the PSU is
adequate for all the hardware you have in your PC.

If it still isn't being detected, you might want to try changing which IDE
Controller on the motherboard that you are connecting it to. It could be a
bad IDE Controller on the actual motherboard... if the mobo is under
guarantee, you can try RMAing it... otherwise it's a new motherboard.
