dvd rom hangs

my dvd drive reads cds & cd roms ok. but when i try to
access data on a dvd rom the computer hangs. i have to
eject the disk to free up the system. help
 
It is possible that you may be using an older DVD drive that does not read
DVD-R (the kind that you can burn yourself).
