DVD "ROM" Compact disc rewritable

This came with CyberLink Power DVD 5. My problem is: when ANY cd or dvd is
placed in drive, the computer may or may not show on the screen the contents
of the disc; but either way, the computer locks up completely...no mouse
movement, clock does not advance, light in dvd goes out, no sound. The only
thing I can do is to reboot. I need to use this drive, please help. Thanks

Check for a hardware fault. With the computer unplugged, open the case
and reseat the ribbon cable and the power supply connector going to the
drive. Make sure the inside of the case is clean. If this solves the
issue, fine. If not, try a different drive. If all is well, discard the
original drive.
