I have a Dell Dimension 4100 that has both a DVD-ROM and an HP CD-RW drive
in it. Both are on the secondary IDE channel (DVD on primary, CD-RW on the
secondary). Everything appears to be connected properly, BIOS settings look
OK, and I have the DVD as master and the CD-RW as slave. However, when both
drives are connected, W2K will only 'see' one of the drives - IOW, the DVD
is 'seen' but not the CD-RW. I know the CD-RW is working, because if I
connect the IDE cable to just it, it works fine. It is as though the DVD
'blocks' the other drive. I even tried switching both drives to 'Cable
Select' but that still did nothing. Also, I tried uninstalling the secondary
IDE, and then letting W2K redetect the port and drives - but again, all it
sees is one drive.
Again, everything appears to look OK, but W2K will just not recognize the
second drive. Right now, I have just the CD-RW plugged in, as that is more
important; however, I would like to have both drives working, if possible.
I am pretty good with hardware, but this has me stumped. Any ideas out
there?
P.S. When I have both drives plugged in, the BIOS sees and recognizes both
drives - it just appears that W2K is the one that isn't 'seeing' the drives
properly.
