Dvd rom and an external cd-r not listed in My Computer

I have just loaded Microsoft Digital Image Suite Plus and after rebooting
both the dvd rom and cd-r disappeared. In the device manager they both have a
message about drivers being disabled (code32). I did a patch that I found in
another question and was up and running again. I loaded some more onto the
computer and rebooted again and they were both gone again. Did another patch
and had them both back. I ran antiviruse and webroot spysweeper and came up
clean. So out of curiosity, I rebooted and they are gone again. What do I
need to do know?
