DVD rewrite drive is not burning CDs

I have two programs on my laptop that deal with MP3 files. Neither of the
programs will burn the MP3 files to the CD I use. I think there is a problem
with my DVD rewriter but I can't seem to do anything about it. I have updated
the drivers and looked for more suitible ones, but the system says the DVD
drive is working properly but it still does not want to burn MP3 files to a
CD. Can anyone help?

Combo drives use two different lasers - one for cd's and one for dvd's.
It sounds like your cd laser has died. Swap out the drive for a known
working one to test. If you can now burn both types of disks, discard
the original drive.
