I have a US DVD which a colleague played on his (3 mth old) Sony Vaio (in the
UK) after changing the region setting from 2 to 1. I followed the guidance on
this site to do likewise on my (2 yr old) Sony Vaio but don't have a 'DVD
region' option under the 'Properties' tab. Can someone tell me where else I
might find this and whether my older hardware can make this change? Thanks,
Chrissy.

DVD drives will "lock" to a region after 5 plays.
You must have played a region-coded DVD five
times or more.
Region locked drives can be "unlocked" with the
following freeware "dvd genie":

DVD drives will be 'locked' only when you make 5 changes between regions -
not five plays in any one region.

Hi Decoder, I've never played a DVD video on this drive before - only viewed
clips on European music CDs. I checked the site you referd to and it says the
genie software works only on region free DVD players and that any system post
Jan 2000 is region restricted. It links to another software for post Jan 2000
PCs but it costs $40 and it'd not worth this just for one DVD.

Any other ideas?

Thanks, Chrissyd.

Thanks, Jerry - but I don't think this is the problem because this is the
first DVD video I've played in this drive so have never had to alter the
region settings before. I have played clips on European music CDs but also
not made any changes to do this. Any other ideas? Thanks, Chrissyd.

You are WRONG.

DVD drives will lock to a region after five plays of a specific
region , regardless if consecutive.

Then you have one of the OEM region specific drives.
It's all to do with Hollywoods influence etc.
There maybe a firmware update that may undo it,
but as I don't have details of your drive, nor system.
I feel it is a case of you are stuck with a drive that is
region specific.

Overview of how to watch different region disks on your PC.

Permanently setting your DVD drive to Region Free is the way to go !

http://3dgamer.tripod.com/Regions.html

Caution:
You normally only get 4 or 5 goes at changing the DVD
drive's region code, after that the DVD drive locks on the
last region code you changed it to.

So its best to just permanently make your DVD drive Region
Free, this is possible on most popular DVD drives.

DVD drives that are legally for sale with or without a PC in a
specific country used to have their DVD drive region code
initially set to that countrys DVD region's code, and the user
could manually change it up to 5 times, then no further
changes could be made. The DVD manufacturer would set
the DVD drive's region code at the factory before shipping
to the country of sale.
