Hi, my CPU is operating on Windows XP, and the Sony DVD recorder I installed
a few years ago worked like a champ... until, eventually, it stopped
recognizing any CDs or DVDs; the computer recognizes the drive, but not any
discs.
Then I purchased an LG external DVD recorder, which is connected by USB;
this also worked great until the same thing occurred... the computer
recognizes the drive, but does not recognize any inserted discs. What
gives?

XP does not recognize a DVD-RW disc

Also:
Right click on the My Computer Icon on your desktop and select Manage and
select: Device Manager
(Or: Go to Start, then select 'Run' and in the Open field enter: devmgmt.msc
then click on the OK button)

After the Device Manager window opens, click the "+" to expand the
DVD/CD-Rom drives option.
Next, right-click on the DVD Drive you are having problems with and select
Uninstall.
You will be prompted to reboot your computer,
Reboot and Windows XP will re-install the DVD Drive.

You don't say how old the various drives are, but optical drives must
qualify as the single most unreliable piece of hardware encountered in
computers. Basically, the lasers are limited life items and deteriorate in
use. Drives normally seem to average around 18 months to 2 years (but this
will depend on use). I have had a drive fail within 7 months with fairly
light useage.
