dvd reads but cd doesn't

Hello

My DVD-R/-RW drive can read DVD's but nothing else. It tries to read
from the CD's but fails. It even fails to read the product recovery
CD's for my computer so it can't be a problem with the CD's
themselves.

The model is DVD-ROM sd-r6012. It reads cd's or was doing until 2 days
ago. I have a feeling it happened after I installed some windows
updates but can't be sure about that.

Hi

I checked through these support articles but nothing there apples to
my problem. As I say it can read DVD's fine but not CD's, even the
ones that came with my PC. I've only just go the system and it was
working fine up until two days ago.

When I put a CD in it keeps trying to read the disc but can't and
eventually gives up. There are no error messages reported however when
I try to access the drive using command windows I get the error
message

"The disc in drive D: is not formatted properly. Please check the
disk, and reformat if necessary"

(This is with the computer manufacturers disc in the drive. so
incorrect formatting is not the problem)

I have a feeling that the problem may have started after installing
some windows updates but I can't be sure about that. Could that cause
this sort of problem? I'm just perplexed as to why it can read DVD's
OK but not CD's.

You could try unintalling it through device manager, then reboot and it
should reinstall automatically.

Use System REstore to back to the point before installing anything.
