DVD reading CDs, not DVDs

I recently updated my computer and kept my 'old' CD/DVD read-only drive, along with the new DVD burner. The burner reads DVDs, but the read-only drive no longer does, though it still reads CDs happily

Device manager does not shed any light (at least to my eyes): both drives have similar settings

I'm reluctant to believe this is a hardware problem because it happened only after the upgrade

Any clues gratefully received

How did you upgrade your computer? Hardware? Software? Operating System?
Did you also update all of the drivers for all of the components on your
computer?

Do you have XP compatible DVD software installed? (such as Power DVD). XP
does not contain DVD software, you must install it.
