DVD-RAM drivers

I am about to take delivery of an LG Electronics GSA-4081S DVD writer, OEM
version. I understand that Nero 6 will take care of the software
requirements for DVD-R, RW etc, but what about DVD-RAM?

Will Nero service that as well, or is there a DVD-RAM driver that I should
download from elsewhere?

If the latter, where can I get it?

TIA

Normally the DVD-RAM driver software comes together
in the installation CD, at least this is how
Panasonic does.

You don't need any software for DVD-RAM under XP. I have three DVD-RAMS,
including the one you bought, and in all cases, the disks mount as an
additional drive letter, and are accessed just like a hard drive. All you
need to do is a quick format for each new disk and you will be good to go.

I am running ME and have no immediate intention of upgrading.

Quick format ? Are you referring to FAT32 or UDF ?

This is an OEM product, ie it's just the bare drive without software.

Hello,

My Panasonic SW-9571 was OEM, too, but came bundled with drivers, on a
CD-ROM. This included a "DVD-RAM driver," just as "Rubens" indicated.
(I'm a Windows 98SE user.)

I assume that LG Electronics would follow the same policy, as other
manufacturers do. OEM or not, computer hardware normally requires
drivers, for basic functionality; "burning software" (in this instance)
is another matter, entirely.

Good luck!

It comes with the drive.

Not for storage devices, except for stuff that doesn't follow standards (some
USB, Zip drives).

Don't know why DVD-RAM should be special, other than Win 98 is ancient.

Now that the drive has arrived I can tell you this: It is advertised with
e-buyer UK as OEM, but is branded LG. It comes with absolutely nothing, not
even screws!

Nope, I bought an OEM from LG and it only had an old version of Nero with
it. No driver disc whatsoever. The retail version was only $15 more(USD) and
heck, the DVD-RAM disc that came with it was almost enough to make for that
difference, but the main thing was that it came with all the software
including drivers and formatters. So I returned it for the retail version.
But still, I don't think LG has any control over how OEM or "Brown-bag"
hardware is sold. I think that's more a function of the seller. Most sellers
will just wrap it up in bubble wrap and be done with it. I suppose if I
would have bitched enough, the seller would send me the driver disk but I
think they assume that modern OS' will handle the drive with native drivers.
They didn't consider that the user might want to take advantage of the
format tools that come with the driver disk.

Hello, CW:

Bummer! I just searched LG Electronics' US <http://us.lge.com> and UK
<http://www.lge.co.uk> Web sites, and found no references to the
GSA-4081S, whatsoever.

Sadly, it's possible the Win9x family (which includes ME) isn't even
supported by this DVD writer, as far as DVD-RAM is concerned. That's
a disturbing, general trend, of late, and obviously designed to force
people to upgrade to Microsoft's newer OSes (e.g., Windows XP).

Don't give in, man; resist, as I am doing! <G>

Resistance is futile |-)

Its well worth the upgrade, much better.

Hello, Rod:

Actually, the compatibility issue is twofold: I fear that XP will never
support a few of my older devices (e.g., Pinnacle/Miro "DC30plus" video
capture card). Thus, I'd probably need to "upgrade" some of my hardware,
as well as the OS, itself.

Too damned expensive, I say! What do you think?

There certainly is some hardware around that the
manufacturer doesnt bother to support under XP.

I dont know anything specific about that particular hardware tho.

Hello, Rod:

It's an analog capture board. As the USA is scheduled to shift to HDTV,
exclusively, within a few years, the DC30plus's days might be numbered,
anyhow.

Rats, foiled again! :-J
