Nearly all of them will play DVD-R; some will play either. You have to read
the specs of the DVD player (I read mine at the manufacturer's web site before
I made my purchase).

You can get DVD burners that can use either media too.

There is no answer to this question, every player is different. The player
may have specs for compatibility, but they are always wrong. you gotta try
some and see.

dvdrhelp.com has a database of such things. It's a complex thing that
appears to vary by media type (+r, -r, etc), media brand, media code,
burner, and player. I've had success with both +r and -r media in my
2 year old Sony consumer player.

Best Regards,

It depends on the specific model. When I was shopping for my latest DVD player,
I took samples of DVD+R, DVD-R, VCD, MP3, and DVD+RW disks with me. I found one
that would play all my samples, and I bought it. :-)

Actually, the Apex didn't play all the samples I had when I was shopping, so it
didn't get the nod.

I'm curious... what brand did you end up with.
I haven't got all the formats, but my JVC hasn't objected to any I've fed it
yet.

It's very subjective. Every player I have looked at the manual for has had a
disclaimer that even though they say it's whatever-type compatible, it may
not play the disk.

Some tips:

Use a writer and software package that allows you to set the "booktype" to
"ROM" that greatly enhances the possibility that it will run in most players
and use quality media; some players get finicky with error-laden media.

Personally, I use Nero 5.5.x and a Plextor 708 burner. My old Panasonic 311
was a raving hunk of crap for compatibility.

Good luck!

Mine is a Cyberhome from Radio Shack. It was on sale for $48, and it's worked
fine since I got it.

Just burn ur DVD's in UDF format and most DVD players will play it
regardless of whether its on DVD + or - R discs. I had the same worry now
even my Xbox reads the DVD's I make with my fixed LG DVD - r.
Use nero to do this. Make VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folders and copy the Vobs
etc to VIDEO_TS in nero UDF/ISO mode.
