DVD query

I have a combi DVD VCR recorder Panasonic No DMR -ES30VEB . I can record
onto a DVD -RW but not to a DVD - R. (ie.non rewritable) The DVD shows
it is recording but after a short time I get a message:- "SLF? check"
check "bye" "hello" " SLF check" and eventually a message "Please
change the disc"
Someone told me I need to format the disc but when I try to do this the
menu does not include an option to format as shown on page 80 of the
operating instructions book. I did wonder whether I would have to
finalise the disk before formattimg it. Here again when I try to do
this as per page 81 of the book I get as far as selecting "Top menu"
but no further. If I highlight "finalize" I get a message "No
recordable title cannot finalize" I appreciate this is not a computer
problem and it is unlikely that anyone will have a copy of the
"operating instructions book" but I am hoping someone will be able to
say what I might be doing wrong. Any help would be much appreciated

No. Once you finalize a -R or +R disc, you can't write to it (which
includes formatting it).

Your burning software ought to format the disc for you. You didn't
tell us which software you're using, but I would guess it's a
software bug or else you're not using the program correctly. Since
you can successfully write a -RW it seems the DVD drive is good.

Unless ... check the specs for the drive. Does it actually write DVD-
Rs, or only -RW and +R?

The only software that I've seen format a DVD-R with any hope of success was
Roxio Drag-to-Disk. Have you considered asking Panasonic?
