Funny you should say that as I'm after some burning software that will allow me to
burn DVD's with my CD writer ;-)

AFAIK you cannot read a DVD, or write a DVD with a CR-ROM or CDR/RW
respectively as the format is completely different. You might be able to
do this if your drive was actually a DVD-ROM or DVD burner with the DVD
function disabled in firmware, but I am unaware that such units exist at
this time. Technically what you are asking for is impossible.

Is there a slight chance you might mean you want to play VCD's?

A DVD (in the meaning of a 3,2 or larger beer coaster) is only readable with
a dvd player like H-man already said. But there are also VCDs These are CDs
with a (often) MPEG compressed movie in a special format. (A very loose
explanation, as I'm not so into movies) IIRC these cds can be palyed with
windows media player (Might be you need a specific Codex to play it, but I
know Media player can do this) As for the codex, I'm afraid I can't help you
with that one, but someone in thiss group might.
