DVD problem

Please help! I've just bought a second hand pc. I'm new
to all this I.T! The DVD player is not rergistering it
has a disc in, when it has. I've cleaned it with sergical
spirits and a cleaning disc. Can you help me please?
 
Do you have DVD software installed? Will the DVD drive read a data or music
CD?
