Hi Steve.

How many game CDs have you tried in the dvd drive? Do those game DVD(s)
read ok in another dvd drive?

Cd games work fine, and the DVD games work in other PC's ok too.

Hi Steve.

Have you tried replacing this drive with another dvd drive and see if
you have the same problem? Are the other machine(s) you are trying
these game dvds in that work fine running the same or different OS?

I have tried a different drive and still get the same problem. Tried the
drive in other machine with different and same OS's and it works fine,
though one machine did do the same problem which was also running Vista.

I think the problem is with Vista, and do think it maybe a registery
problem. But as i am not 100% happy with the registery I dont want to go
playing around. I am happy to do stuff to the registry if following
instructions, but thats about it!.

thx

Your problem does certainly seem to have something to do with vista. At
this point, assuming the game(s) DVDs you are having this problem with
are vista compatible, my recommendation would be to seek support from
the game manufacturer or to see if they have forums available to post
on. Your best bet to find a fix is to speak to others who have tried
the game on vista and see if any of them have the same problem or if
they found a way to fix it. Good luck.

Do you have a restore point created from before it started happening?

I have tried a few restore points but without success. I do recall
installing a piece of software a few months back (that i have removed
since). It was for burning DVD's, now i know some packages change
registery keys which maybe the case here.

Should I uninstall the driver, remove the reg keys and reboot?

I think if you created a restore point before doing so, then trying
would not hurt. Also you should make sure you have a backup of all of
your data and files just in case something bad happens.
