Had to replace MoBo, Vista booted to the Desktop OK despite the new
MoBo having a totally different chipset etc.
However one problem niggles, if a CD/DVD is inserted any attempt at
accessing the contents in Explorer locks up the system and I loose
the Desktop, even Cntr+Alt+Delete doesn't work.

On first boot Vista wanted me to activate due to the new hardware
config so I did, with hindsight maybe I would have been better off
doing a repair install, as I am now concerned a repair install will
require activation this could be a problem with Microsoft maybe?.
I have tried uninstalling DVD drive, IDE/SATA controllers and tested the
DVD drive in another machine [it's OK], any help with fixing this
problem would be appreciated.
OS Vista Business + SP1
MoBo MSI K9 NEO V3, AMD 4600 CPU
WD SATA HDD, Pioneer SATA DVD

Does the other machine in which you tested the optical drive too have
Windows Vista with service pack 1?

thanks for responding, no actually it is running XP Pro SP3.
That shouldn't be a problem should it, I know Vista is picky with
some devices but a DVD drive ?.

Should have mentioned, it all worked OK before the new MoBo
transplant, so I reckon we can discount an incompatible device

It may be a problem.Drivers written for Windows Vista with service pack 1
would obviously be different from those written for Windows XP with service
pack 3.Please provide the complete and accurate model number of the optical
drive.

Then you are probably better off with getting the latest software updates
and driver utilities for your motherboard. Please contact MSI.

Vista does not have a repair install. It has an In Place Upgrade (which has
to be run from the desktop).

If you are using an old style 40-wire/40-pin IDE cable that may be your
problem. The higher frequencies on newer machines create too much
cross-talk and an 80-wire/40-pin cable is needed (the extra wires ground out
the cross-talk).

How can one connect a SATA device to an IDE Cable ?, please read the
complete thread before responding.
