Hi there,

I'm running Windows 2000 Pro sp4 on a celeron 1100s with plenty of ram and
HDD space.
I cannot get windows to recognize my new dvd burner. Its a Samsung SH -W162C
I'm not wildly computer literate so any help will be welcome.

In what way? Have you bought any burner software? Burning is not native to
the operating system.

Check Device Manager for error codes and or non-starting devices.

Doesn't show up in the list of DVD/CD-ROM Drives.
Check jumper settings, check that everything is plugged in correctly
(cables firmly seated).

After that, the first place to check is whether it is recognised in the
BIOS. If it isn't, your problem isn't windows.

Seems a hardware or hardware configuration problem at this point.

I just installed a W162Z to replace a CD burner. It was immediately
recognized as a "TSSTCorp CD/DVDW SH-W162Z" and is functional. I suspect
your drive is not installed properly. Make sure it's jumpered appropriately
as slave or master, and that the cable is firmly and correctly attached to
both drive and MB.

It should show up in the drive list displayed by most BIOSes at boot time.

How is the drive cabled? IDE 1 or IDE 2? Alone or with another device?
How are the jumpers set? Master? Slave? Cable Select?
Did you use a 40 wire or an 80 wire cable?
Does the drive show up in BIOS?
