Any clues muchly appreciated,

A couple of months ago I fitted a 2nd dvd rewriter and have only just
discovered I can't burn a disc in it !
The top drive in midi tower LG GH22NP20 is ok,
but, lowermost LiteOn DH16D2S (which I've just remembered is connected to a
SIL3132 pci-e 2 x SATA card, in case it may be relevant.)

NerInfo tool shows empty tick boxes for all the "write" features

TIA

regards, Richard

Just out of curiosity, I web searched on the model.

It appears to be a DVD-ROM drive. Doesn't burn *anything*.

I had no idea that anyone made SATA DVD-ROM drives. I though that it was all
burners by the time that SATA became common for optical drives.

Hi

Is there any sata port on the motherboard itself which allow you to connect
the dvd rewriter? If there is try using those instead of the sata card and
see how it goes.

Also is there any jumper on the optical drive that require to be set
accordingly?

Regards

Read carefully the actual description of the device at:

http://us.liteonit.com/us/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=225&Itemid=99

Where do you see that this device can *write* to removable media? In
fact, according to their picture, it says "DVD-ROM" right on the cover
plate!

DVD-ROM = Digital Versatile Disk - Read Only Memory

That is a READ-ONLY device. That you can *read* recordable (CD-R/DVD-R)
or *read* rewritable (CD-RW/DVD+-RW) media does not mean you can *write*
to that media. One just like it sells for $20; see:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827106276

A burner (that can write) from Lite-On costs about $6 more. The LG
GH22NP20 (see http://www.directron.com/gh22np20.html for a description)
is a burner so that is why it works to burn CD-R[W] or DVD-+R[W] discs.

Looks like you pulled the wrong device out of that old computer, you
bought the wrong product, or you got ripped off by the seller.
NerInfo tool shows empty tick boxes for all the "write" features

Which would be correct for a READ-only device.

Oh my G*d, <blush> ...now in daylight ! :-) ...I see that it is indeed a
DVD-ROM. ...multiple excuses now follow ...
....too many late nights, ....teeny bit too much Cabernet Sauvignon,
....should have put the strip light on out here, ...should have tapped the
model no. into Google etc. etc.

many thanks
