First thing to check is if the system volume slider is set to high as
setting it too high can cause the sound to distort. If you see a speaker
icon in the notification area (the area adjacent to the clock in the
taskbar) double click, if the volume slider for CD audio or Play Control is
set higher then mid-level, start moving it down in increments, try playing
the disk again each time until the distortion clears.

If there is no speaker in the notification area Open Control Panel, open
Sounds and Audio Devices and click Advanced under Device Volume.

If your graphics card is sharing memory with main system memory, then yes,
it might be a memory issue but it won't be solved by changing the memory
allocation as that will either take memory from the main system memory which
the soundcard would be using or take it from the graphics card.

If your system falls into that category, you should look into getting a
graphics card with its own memory, at least 128MB as DVD films and games
consume a lot of memory.

If you aren't sharing memory, take a look at the items running at the same
time you are playing a disk, you may need to shutdown firewalls, antivirus
and/or other apps that may be running in the background during this
function.
