I just installed a DVD drive (my first) into a Win ME/Athlon 1500 machine. I
put a DVD into it, and could see files on it but couldn't play it.

What software, drivers, etc. do I need to watch DVDs on this PC? Is this PC
strong enough to play DVDs? Thanks

You need some software like Cyberlink PowerDVD or a zillion other
software DVD players.

Try it. Should be OK but theres no guarantee that it wont pause etc
that depends on alot of things.

500MHz machine can play DVD movies. Make sure DMA is enabled for the DVD
drive.

It is usual for a DVD-ROM drive to come with a software DVD player.

Otherwise check the CD that came with your graphics card. ATI, Matrox and
others provide software players with their chipsets.

Or, the free and excellent Winamp 3 will play just about everything
http://www.winamp.com/

Or, get the free Windows Media Player 9 or just the codec pack for earlier
versions
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/format/codecdownload.aspx

Otherwise there are plenty of commercial players, PowerDVD, WinDVD, etc. but
they cost.

there is a patch available that lets media player read & play DVD`s.....
i like that idea better than using different software....
i`ve been using that for the times i`ve needed to open a dvd movie on the
pc....
normally just to see i have "backed them up" correctly. :)

brett.....

It's not really a "patch" so much as it's a whole other piece of
software.

You will need a DVD decoder and a directshow filter for that decoder,
with the DS filter properly installed, otherwise, MP will not see the
codecs.

With earlier MS Mediaplayer versions (8.1 or earlier), if you
installed a DVD player software package, MS MP would configure itself
to play DVDs as well. With MS MP version 9, it won't. If you're
talking about a patch to work around this, there may indeed be one,
but you would still need the codecs installed either separately or as
a part of some software package.

MP, by itself will not play DVDs, with or without a patch.

You need to install a DVD viewing software program. Didn't one come with
your DVD burner?
